Whether you are an experienced languages teacher in an established program or a new teacher commencing a Prep program in a school for the first time, coaching is a cost-effective investment in professional development.
How many times have you come back from a conference or workshop full of enthusiasm, only to find the routine of classroom and extra-curricular activity doesn’t allow you the time and space to adopt or embed new techniques and ideas?
The DEECD initiative, ‘Coaching Teachers in Effective Instruction‘ points out that regular conversations with a skilled coach can help you:
- define your professional and personal goals
- align your teaching practices to your vision, values and beliefs and those of your school
- develop your strengths, self-efficacy and evidence-informed decision making
- identify priorities and translate them into actions in order to achieve sustainable change
- integrate digital resources and tools that support differentiated learning
- build on reflective teaching practices and monitor improvement in student learning outcomes
Background in Languages Education
I was recognised as a Highly Accomplished Teacher for my work between 2003 – 2009, transforming LOTE at Ruyton Girls Junior School into a successful CLIL program teaching ICT in French. I went on to become the Languages Education Consultant for Independent Schools Victoria, providing advice to schools on LOTE programs and the integration of ICT in learning activities, facilitating professional development for teachers and serving on numerous professional boards and committees. I have provided languages education consulting services to schools and tertiary institutions in Australia, New Zealand and France.

My coaching sessions with Kathy have helped me to identify my strengths and have allowed me to develop a greater awareness of the areas where I would like to make improvements. With her guidance, I have identified practical steps that I can take to assist me to realise my goals.”

Coaches focus on developing teachers as effective independent practitioners who contribute to high performing school communities. Coaching is a highly effective form of professional learning. The support a coach provides is targeted for individual teachers and takes into account the school, community and classroom context in which teachers are working. Coaches provide planned and ongoing point-of-need support, guiding and assisting teachers to progress in their professional learning to build their own capacity
